Installation Guide

Range Hood Safety & Installation

What you need to know before we build.

Hood & Grain manufactures custom decorative range hood enclosures designed to be built around compatible, certified ventilation equipment. This guide outlines the key steps to help you plan your project — from choosing your cooking appliance to verifying requirements before we begin fabrication.

01

Choose Your Cooking Appliance

Your range hood surround is designed around your cooking appliance. Before we can size your hood, you will need to know your range or cooktop width, fuel type (gas, electric, or dual fuel), and the manufacturer and model number. If you have not yet selected your appliance, that is fine — we can begin the design process and confirm appliance details before fabrication begins.

Tip: Gas and dual-fuel ranges typically require higher ventilation capacity than electric cooktops. Your appliance manufacturer's installation instructions will specify minimum clearance and ventilation requirements.

02

Choose a Compatible Ventilation Insert

A ventilation insert is the functional component — the blower, filters, and controls — that sits inside your decorative Hood & Grain surround. You will need to select a certified insert that is compatible with your appliance and your duct configuration. We recommend working with your appliance supplier, HVAC professional, or kitchen designer to select an appropriate insert. Key specifications to confirm include rated CFM capacity, duct diameter and direction, and certification (CSA, cUL, or cETL for Canadian installations).

Hood & Grain does not supply ventilation inserts. We design and build the decorative surround to accommodate your chosen insert.

03

Determine Required Clearance

Minimum clearance between the cooking surface and the bottom of the range hood is specified by both the cooking appliance manufacturer and the ventilation insert manufacturer. These requirements vary by appliance type, fuel type, and insert model. Always follow the most restrictive requirement that applies to your installation. Your qualified installer or authority having jurisdiction should verify clearance requirements for your specific project.

Hood & Grain does not publish universal clearance requirements because the correct clearance depends on your specific appliance and insert combination.

04

Plan Ducting & Installation

Your range hood will need to be ducted to the exterior of your home. Duct routing, diameter, length, and the number of elbows all affect ventilation performance. Your HVAC or mechanical professional should plan the duct run and confirm that the system meets the requirements of your ventilation insert. For higher-capacity installations, your professional should also assess whether make-up air provisions are required for your home and jurisdiction.

Recirculating (ductless) installations are not recommended for gas or dual-fuel appliances. Confirm ducting requirements with your installer before finalizing your hood dimensions.

05

Verify Before We Build

Before Hood & Grain begins fabrication, we will review your appliance details, ventilation insert specifications, hood dimensions, and any relevant installation requirements with you. This is your opportunity to confirm that all dimensions, clearances, and specifications are correct. Changes after fabrication begins may not be possible, so we encourage you to have your installer review the design before we proceed.

We are here to help coordinate the decorative design — your qualified installer and the equipment manufacturers are the authoritative sources for installation requirements.

Important Notice

Hood & Grain manufactures custom decorative range hood enclosures. Final installation must comply with the cooking appliance and ventilation equipment manufacturer's installation instructions and applicable building, gas, mechanical, electrical and fire requirements for the project location. Final installation and compliance should be verified by the appropriate qualified installer and/or authority having jurisdiction.
